My name is Yulia Brodskaya, I use strips of heavy paper and card as if I’m drawing or painting with paper strips. Painting with paper means imitating brush strokes with tightly packed strips of paper, achieved by combining different colour strips in a method similar to mixing paints on a palette. This new technique that I came up with comes as close to actual painting as possible, but with the added quality of a third dimension!
My 10-year paper art journey is a reflection of my development as a person, it evolved naturally from simple structured designs into complex organic universes seen in my recent paper portraits. I’m interested in conveying a deeper emotional complexity with my paper art; right now, sometimes it feels that depicting just a beautiful flower, a pretty shell or a decorative wave on its own is simply ‘not enough’… A human presence is needed to deepen the visual experience, the feel & emotional charge coming from the artwork, so often I end up combining the natural motifs with human faces.
My paper art practice is not just about the portraits, I am interested in exploring different applications for my paper techniques: from brand collaborations to the most unexpected project I ever created called Paper Mingle – it is a mobile puzzle game/app that brings the tactile hand-made feel of papercraft into a digital universe. One of the main reasons behind the creation of such a project is the idea to introduce paper art aesthetics to a wider audience and reach people who would never have heard of paper art otherwise, this little gateway may eventually lead them to discovering the endless possibilities of paper art, such as Paper Portraiture. I know it’s a long shot, but I wholeheartedly believe in the importance of creating and sharing the beauty and uplifting feelings of joy and positivity through Art, and Paper Art especially, because there is something about paper as a material that feels grounding and full of warmth.
