Self Taught Face Painter and SFX Makeup Artist Kara Williams
My name is Kara Williams and I am a face painter and special effects artist located near Houston, Texas. I just recently started experimenting with painting and SFX, and it has turned into a very influential hobby of mine. I have made a lot of friends along the way and learned a lot of cool techniques.
I get a lot of my inspiration from different artists online, my husband’s drawings and art, and sitting around pondering what weird thing I can do next. I, along with a lot of others I’ve seen, really get a kick out of the SFX makeup. The possibilities are really endless. Whatever your mind can come up with. Things can definitely get messy, but it is always so fun!
What I do on any given day depends on what I’m in the mood to do. Whether I want to be cute or creepy that day. I will say, that I feel the SFX is slightly less challenging than face painting, but it is definitely challenging in its own way. It takes practice and patience to perfect it, and believe me, I have to be a perfectionist. The more attention to detail, the more believable your work will be!
I definitely plan to continue with this journey and improve to the best of my abilities. I have surprised myself thus far with certain projects I have done, and love that I have been able to break out of my shell and share my work with everyone else. ~ mooniesmakeup
This one was inspired by a recent makeup trend going around. I have been a big fan of Sailor Moon since I was a little girl! This took probably 2-3 hours to be honest. It was very small, and my hand was shaking so bad trying to get the pixels to look right! When I was done, I was very happy with the outcome, especially her wand.
I’ve always wanted to give the illusion my face is cracked, and this one took some work! It took me a couple of tries to get it right. I used Snazaroo face paints and black eyeshadows for this look.
This one was inspired by 30 Second to Mars. I have been a big fan of theirs since I was a teen! They wear this mask in their “Beautiful Lie” music video. I used Snazaroo face paints to achieve this look, as well as some brown eyeshadows to make the illusion that it is sitting above my face. All of this is my face as well, no actual mask was involved.
This look was inspired by Coraline’s other mother! The buttons are real, but everything else was done with Snazaroo’s black face paint and black eyeshadow. This one took me a little over an hour to complete.
This is definitely one of my favorite looks. Inspired by my extreme love for Christmas, and how overwhelmed my husband must feel when I want to put the tree up after we are done trick or treating on Halloween night! I was really proud of this one. I used liquid latex, stage blood, some eyeshadows to give a bruised look, Snazaroo face paints and some broken Christmas ornaments I had laying around the house.
This one was for a Halloween shoot I did! I went with a dark Angel look. The black horns are attached to my forehead with liquid latex. I also used Snazaroo face paints to achieve this look, as well as chunky black glitter to complete the goth but glam look!
For this photo, this was inspired by Anrijs Straume, a dark trash realism tattoo artist located in England. This was a lot of fun, but also very challenging! I used Snazaroo face paints along with some black eyeshadow for this look. It took me about 3 hours!
This was a fun look!! I wanted to give the illusion that I had a long night the night before, on New Years Eve. I love to paint my face mostly, but I’ve been enjoying doing some special effects makeup as well! It took about 45 minutes to do this look! I definitely plan on doing more of these in the future.
