Realistic colored pencil drawings by artist Renske

My name is Renske. I am a 20 year old artist from the Netherlands. I always used to draw quite a bit but never took it seriously. I started drawing properly when I was 13. During my summer holidays, I had found an art account on Instagram. The artist posted a few tutorials on how to draw a realistic portrait. I grabbed some old art supplies together and gave it a go. After about six hours I finished the drawing. It was much better than I expected it to turn out and I really enjoyed it. The next day I decided to make another portrait and the day after another one. The rest of my summer holiday I was almost making a drawing a day. After that, I still carried on. I slowly got better and came up with new techniques. Sometimes I watched a YouTube video or came up with techniques myself. At first, I would use a couple of graphic pencils, an eraser, cotton wool buds and toilet paper. Later I used paper stumps to blend the pencil and got more new supplies. A little over a year later I had saved enough money to buy a set of coloured pencils which I still use to this day. Over time my drawings got more and more realistic and I enjoyed drawing more every time. It was my own thing and it always very therapeutic for me.

When it comes to drawing I am quite perfectionistic. I enjoy making my drawing as close to the photo as possible. I have always drawn portraits since that’s what I think is the most fun to draw. In the past couple of years, I have tried to become a bit more creative with my art. I now try to push myself to put more thought into a drawing by creating something like a background. I have also experimented with making very simple drawings. These drawings are of things like animals, clothes or flowers and I use only a few bright or pastel colours. I really like making one of those every now and again. Especially since I started using Posca markers I have been really enjoying it. I always use a small brush to spread the marker paint which is very therapeutic for me. But drawing realistic portraits is what I still enjoy the most. I always like to draw people I really like at the moment. Like an actor from a series I just watched or a music artist, I have on repeat.

So far, my biggest work has been my drawing of Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones. I drew this one on A3-sized paper which is twice as big as what I usually draw on. I thought it was more fun than to draw three huge dragons in the background of which I couldn’t find any good reference. It ended up taking over four months but I am so proud of that one. I somehow didn’t get fed up or bored with working on it and it was such a big accomplishment when I had finished it.

I haven’t chosen to become a professional artist because of different reasons. I study nursing now and I have never regretted that choice. Luckily, so far, I have always been able to combine drawing with my study. that you can find me on Instagram: @art.ic.monkeys
