My name is Carlianne Tipsey, I’m a children’s book illustrator from San Jose, California. I have wanted to be a painter since I was 9 years old. I remember watching the Lion King while coloring in my Lion King coloring book and thinking “Wow, I wish I could learn to paint like that someday.” I even wrote to Disney to inquire if they had any jobs just for coloring in the characters. They wrote me back a very sweet letter that explained I would need to learn how to draw first, as their animators generally do the coloring.
So that’s what led me to get a degree in Animation/Illustration. I actually got to work for Disney Interactive here in my city for a while; I got paid to draw Disney Princesses! It was the best! Unfortunately, the studio closed and I decided to venture into freelance illustration. I decided that my art has always been driven by a love of characters, storytelling, color and all things cute. I now illustrate books and children’s magazines full time. However, as someone who loves to learn, I’ve been working on creating more and more personal pieces to discover my personal style and to push myself to improve. These pieces were all created in the last few months on my journey to discover style and personality.
Along with my own personal discovery, I started an instagram which has grown to 10,000 likes with just 60 posts! I’ve been posting tutorials and process and trying to help others along their own personal art journey as well. I don’t think there is anything more rewarding than helping others, especially when I can help them with something that I love so deeply. ~ Carlianne Tipsey
