Contemporary Art Sculpture Installations by Yehrim Lee
Viewers of my art always find themes. Some see the ocean—corals or crustaceans, flotsam and jetsam. Others see floral motifs. Those with a sweet tooth see themes of the confectionary—cake, frosting, icing. I am glad people bring their own associations to my work. I leave that space open for them to fill. But from the maker’s perspective, I am driven by process, the process of layering, of repetition, of following an intuitive path from one abstract shape to the next. Clay is my primary medium. I often make large, technically difficult work that bends and folds, with my own recipes for glazes that bubble and froth. I often suspend sculptures on walls or in space and create connections with fiber or paper. Often, my process tends to create a sense of “too-muchness” in my work, which I think my audience senses in the themes they see. Though I recognize these themes, I don’t purposefully press toward them. Instead, I think of myself a conduit through which contemporary life passes and is reorganized by a consciousness. Through my work, I understand myself and my culture; so, I invite you to tell me what you see in my work, for at my shows, I am just as interested in finding unexpected connections and themes in my work as my audience. ~ Yehrim Lee
