John Cooney Artist Portraits & Figurative Art
I was born in Newry and studied at Belfast and Manchester colleges of art, achieving a 1st Class Honours Degree. Despite specialising in Illustration in art college, I worked for many years in advertising and then teaching. I have been painting full time in the past few years and my work has received international acclaim. I have won quite a few awards, at the Royal Ulster Academy, The Watercolour Society of Ireland and recently got second prize in Artist of the Year In the Mall Galleries, London.
I will be exhibiting in the International Watercolour Masters exhibition in 2021.
I find beauty in the commonplace and try to make it unique. I mostly paint the people and places of Donegal, Ireland. The people have partly formed the land but the land and its beauty has also formed the people. It is what I try to show in my paintings.
