Vlada Repina – Botanical Artist & Illustrator Exploring the Beauty of Nature
Vlada Repina is a botanical artist and illustrator from Ukraine. Her work combines detailed graphite drawing with a deep curiosity about the natural world.
Through her ongoing Botanical Diary project, Vlada observes, studies, and documents plants in her sketchbooks, exploring their structure, life cycles, textures, and the small details that make each species unique. She sees her diary as a kind of visual field guide, where art and botanical observation come together.
Her artistic practice is rooted in slow observation and a love of sketchbooks. She shares her drawings, creative process, and botanical studies through her website, YouTube channel, and Botanical Club, encouraging others to slow down, look closely, and discover the beauty of the natural world.

Artist Story: Finding Beauty in the Smallest Details
My journey into botanical drawing started in a rather unexpected way.
I am originally from Ukraine, and during the war, I had to leave my hometown and move to a small village. It was a difficult and emotionally challenging time, and among the few things I brought with me was my beloved sketchbook.
At first, it was simply a place to capture little moments of everyday life. But as I began exploring my new surroundings, I started drawing the plants I found around me. The first flowers of spring, especially dandelions, caught my attention. I could spend hours drawing their tiny petals, and I soon discovered how calming and meditative this process could be.
The more I drew, the more curious I became. I didn’t just want to draw plants — I wanted to understand them. Why do leaves have so many different shapes? How do plants change throughout their life cycle? What makes each species unique?
This curiosity gradually led to my Botanical Diary.
For me, the Botanical Diary is much more than a collection of finished drawings. I see it as a kind of visual field guide — a place where I can observe, study, and document the plants I encounter. I explore their structure, leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds, and other small details that make each species unique. Sometimes I also document different stages of a plant’s life or combine observations from different seasons in one illustration.

I love that the sketchbook allows me to bring together art and learning. A drawing can be beautiful, but it can also help me understand something about the plant itself. By spending time observing and drawing each species, I notice details that I might otherwise overlook.
The diary has also become a record of my own artistic journey. Page by page, I can see how my understanding of plants and my drawing skills develop over time.
Today, I continue to fill my sketchbooks with plants from fields, gardens, forests, and everyday walks. I never quite know what I will discover next.
For me, this is the heart of botanical drawing — slowing down, looking closely, and finding beauty in the world that is quietly growing around us.
