Using wire, wadding and book pages create intricate sculptures
Using wire, wadding and book pages I create sculptural forms which appear to emerge from the pages of old books.
Each book I use relates to the theme of the piece so scouring second-hand bookshops is all part of my process. Sometimes a chance find inspiring a sculpture or alternatively I will search out an appropriate book to match an idea I’ve had.
Having always been drawn to the natural world much of my work reflects this love and so flora and fauna feature heavily, with trees in particular being an endless source of inspiration.
In stark contrast I do also enjoy the geometric forms of buildings so architectural themes can also often be seen in my work.
I begin each piece with a series of drawings before shaping a basic armature with wire, padding the form with wadding, covering with individual strips of book pages and finally adding all the often minute details.
I am based in the UK and over the past ten years my book sculptures have been regularly exhibited in Cambridge and art fairs in London as well as internationally. ~ @emmataylorbooks
